Description
Sherpa 4x4 Heavy Duty Braked Hand Winches
Sherpa heavy duty hand winches are designed for controlled raising and lowering of substantial loads where a simple, reliable manual winch is preferred over an electric system. Available in 1,000kg and 3,000kg first-layer lifting capacities, both models feature an automatic self-locking friction brake to help hold the load when the handle is released.
Heavy Duty Manual Winches with Automatic Brake
These Sherpa hand winches are suitable for demanding lifting and positioning applications including davits, boats, adjustable keels, workshop equipment and other compatible load-handling systems.
The automatic self-locking friction pressure brake allows the operator to raise or lower the load with controlled handle movement. When the handle is released, the brake automatically engages to hold the load in position.
Both models are supplied with a bare drum without rope or cable fitted, allowing the user to select an appropriately rated steel cable or compatible synthetic rope for the intended application.

Automatic Self-Locking Brake
A key feature of the Sherpa heavy duty hand winches is the automatic self-locking friction pressure brake. The brake provides controlled operation when raising or lowering a load and automatically holds the load when the handle is released.
This makes the winches particularly useful for applications where controlled positioning is required rather than simply pulling a load horizontally.
Typical Applications
- Boat davits and lifting systems
- Raising and lowering compatible boats and equipment
- Adjustable sailing boat keels
- Workshop lifting and positioning systems
- Farm and property applications
- Industrial and mechanical equipment positioning
- Other correctly engineered manual lifting systems
Steel Cable or Synthetic Rope
The winches are supplied without rope or cable fitted. This allows users to select a suitable steel cable or compatible synthetic rope to suit the application.
The SWHD1000 drum can accommodate approximately 40m of 8mm rope or cable, while the larger SWHD3000 can accommodate approximately 40m of 12.5mm rope or cable.
Important: Rope or cable, mounting hardware and all other components used in the lifting system must be appropriately rated for the intended load and installation.
First-Layer Lifting Capacity
The stated lifting capacities apply to the first layer of rope or cable on the winch drum:
- SWHD1000: 1,000kg / 2,200lb first-layer lifting capacity
- SWHD3000: 3,000kg / 6,600lb first-layer lifting capacity
As additional layers of rope or cable build up on the drum, the effective mechanical advantage changes and available lifting capacity reduces. Always operate within the rated capacity for the actual rope layer and installation.

Installation & Safe Use
The winch must be securely mounted to a structure capable of supporting the intended load and the forces generated during operation. Select rope or cable, attachment points and mounting hardware that are appropriately rated for the complete lifting system.
Inspect the winch, brake, rope or cable, mounting points and associated hardware before use. Do not exceed the applicable lifting capacity and keep personnel clear of suspended loads during operation.
